This project is a vinyl cover and sleeve redesign for Arctic Monkeys’ album, AM. The concept focuses on a late-night, noir-inspired aesthetic, moving away from the original minimalist waveform to lean into an emotional theme that captures the album’s moody, after-hours atmosphere. Utilizing a hybrid approach of professional photography and hand-drawn vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, I developed a narrative that mirrors the nature of the album, grounded in art fundamentals and psychological tension.
The primary hurdle was maintaining visual clarity within a strictly black-and-white composition. I had to solve the problem of white line thickness, ensuring the linework remained bold enough to be impactful but fine enough to convey details in the piece. Achieving the right balance of clarity and texture was a significant challenge; I had to determine how to suggest depth and materials without “over-highlighting” specific areas, which would have broken the high-contrast noir aesthetic.
My motivation for this redesign was the opportunity to explore visual storytelling without the use of color. I have always been drawn to “sketch styles,” and this album provided the perfect canvas to push a piece in that style. I wanted to see if I could communicate the “longing” and “nocturnal energy” of the tracks through simple, high-contrast visuals. This project allowed me to bridge the gap between my minimalist design and a more complex, narrative-driven composition.
This album holds personal resonance for me, as its themes of “longing for love” and the complexities of human connection mirror my own history with family dynamics and past relationships. The “late-night” vibe of the music matches a specific emotional headspace of reflection and isolation.
The most rewarding part of this project was the translation of the original art into a more complex, storytelling form. I enjoyed the challenge of taking the simplicity of the original AM wave and expanding it into a full cinematic scene while keeping the “soul” of the record intact. Successfully incorporating memories of longing into a serious, noir aesthetic ensured that the final design felt like the music itself.
