This project required the creation of a 12×18 vector poster designed entirely in Adobe Illustrator, inspired by an existing movie poster but illustrated from scratch with no traced or sourced images. The goal was to produce a minimalist design that clearly communicates the film’s core themes and emotional impact
Palmer follows Eddie Palmer, a former football star returning home after prison, who unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a young boy named Sam. As they grow closer, Palmer discovers that redemption and family are found in the bonds we choose, not just the ones we’re born into.
To prepare for the design, I spent time watching the film, its trailers, and reviewing previous poster iterations to understand its visual and emotional language.
From there, I identified the core themes such as redemption, chosen family, emotional healing, connection, and acceptance.
I began brainstorming the feelings and imagery tied to each. This exploration helped shape my direction before I moved into sketching layout ideas and refining them into the final concept.
The typography combines a bold sans-serif title, PALMER, to establish a strong, grounded presence that mirrors the character’s hardened exterior and personal journey.
In contrast, the handwritten tagline introduces a softer, more emotional touch, emphasizing vulnerability, connection, and the idea of chosen family. This pairing creates a clear hierarchy that guides the viewer’s eye naturally from the title to the image, then to the tagline, and finally to the credits.
This piece portrays two characters sharing a swing, captured in a neutral yet intimate moment that symbolizes connection.
The emphasis stays on their silhouettes and body language rather than facial details, allowing the scene to feel universal and emotionally open.
A centered composition reinforces their sense of unity and balance, while the surrounding empty space evokes solitude, reflection, and personal growth.
A soft, natural palette was chosen intentionally to support the tone of the piece. Muted greens symbolize growth, healing, and hope, while warm neutrals ground the visual language in a real-world, human story. The low-contrast background keeps the focus on the characters, allowing their relationship to remain the emotional center. Overall, the palette preserves the film’s warmth while aligning with a clean, modern minimalist aesthetic.
